England and Wales

There are three types of Disclosure available; Enhanced, Standard and Basic.  However, only Enhanced Disclosures are suitable for those working closely with children and/or vulnerable adults.  Standard Disclosures are not suitable for any church roles; they are for people applying for certain professions or licences.  Basic Disclosures reveal any unspent convictions and you can find more information about this type of check here.

Not every role is eligible for an Enhanced DBS check. You are only entitled to find out an applicant's full crminal record history if the role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.  Please check whether your organisation/denomination has issued guidance on the roles that are likely to require an Enhanced DBS check.  Our CAS form has an eligibility checklist on the back and you can also find more information on eligibility on the DBS website.

In Scotland those working with children and/or adults at risk should join the PVG (Protection of Vulnerable Groups) Scheme.  Please click here for further information.  Basic Disclosures are available as well.
