A Basic Disclosure check will reveal any unspent convictions. If a role does not meet the eligibility criteria for an Enhanced DBS Check (or PVG Scheme Membership in Scotland) but you would still find it beneficial to carry out some sort of criminal record check on the applicant, then asking them to apply for a Basic Disclosure can be a good solution.
At present a Basic Disclosure can only be obtained through Disclosure Scotland, although the check does cover the whole of the UK. In 2017 the DBS expect to launch their own Basic Disclosure service.
The applicant applies for the Basic Disclosure directly to Disclosure Scotland on the website, www.disclosurescotland.co.uk . The fee is £25 whether the applicant is paid or a volunteer. The applicant will receive the only copy of the Basic Disclosure certificate and can then show this to their 'employer'.
For more information please see the Disclosure Scotland website or you can call Disclosure Scotland on 03000 2000 40. When we receive information about the Basic Disclosure application process through the DBS we will add that to this page.
